Since 2002 MermaidFX has provided mermaid tails to professionals and individuals online, but our history of tail making dates back to the early 1990's. Starting out as general costume designers making elaborate Halloween costumes of all types it was the introduction of our mermaid costume in 1994 that made a splash and quickly became our most popular design. In 1995 our head designer set out to California and within a week of arrival got a taste of movie magic assisting inside the special makeup effects trailer on location shooting of a television pilot. The show was quickly canceled and it was back to business as usual when forced to return home, but having soaked the experience up like a sponge, it was certainly not in vain.
In 2002 after applying the tips and tricks of the professionals and doing much research into the obscure art of tail making, we opened our first official site dedicated solely to our mermaid tails. Working under the company name of MerTails, Inc. we designed and sold the first consumer priced mermaid costumes made for swimming that were based on the designs of professional Hollywood effects. Our new patented designs were an instant success and quickly found their way into stage plays, underwater shows, television commercials, photographer's studios and backyard pools across the globe.
During our first year we provided rentals of special effects mermaid tails just like the realistic tails seen in the movies as well as budget priced costumes for producer's on a smaller budget. In 2005 we changed our focus and began producing consumer priced costumes exclusively. In addition to our mermaid tails MermaidFX is the distributor of the film catalog of Hollywood's original Million Dollar Mermaid Annette Kellerman, who as the inventor of the very first swimmable mermaid costume in 1909 has been a major influence on us and our designs. In 2005 we produced a limited edition line of costumes based on the designs worn by Annette Kellerman in her numerous films and water shows.
MermaidFX has provided mermaid tails or worked on other mermaid related projects for Nike, Bilabong, PacSun, The Weeki Wachee Springs Mermaids, Buena Vista Television (Disney), NBC/Universal and several other films, television, music video and independent productions. Our extensive mermaid photo, film and history archive has been accessed by The Learning Channel, George Eastman House, The International Swimming Hall of Fame and MGM.
